CMU-Q football team wins Qatar Foundation championship cup
The Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) men’s football team won the Education City University Football League championship cup last Thursday after a dramatic 3 – 2 victory over Hamad Bin Khalifa University. CMU-Q was undefeated in the league this season.
The team was formally named both league and cup champions at the Qatar Foundation sports banquet on Saturday, where they also received the sportsmanship award. CMU-Q’s Abdurrehman Syed was named best goalkeeper and Mohammed Larri, Hussain Feroun, Taimur Rizwan and Moussa Zekak were selected as men’s football all-stars. Zelealem Yilma, assistant teaching professor of mathematics, received the award for best coach.

Qatar Foundation also awarded athletes for Education City-wide sport tournaments that took place throughout the spring semester. CMU-Q was the most recognized university at the banquet, also receiving awards for: sportsmanship and best coach in women’s futsal (Lauren Burakowski, assistant teaching professor of psychology); women’s futsal all-star (Almayasa Al-Naimi); first (Ahmed Zahid) and third (Abdurrehman Syed) in the badminton tournament; and first place in table tennis and second place in billiards (Taimur Rizwan).

CMU-Q clubs and sport teams are student-led, and they form an integral part of the student experience. In 2019, there were 35 recognized clubs at CMU-Q.
