To kick off the new academic year, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar dedicated a full week to fostering a campus-wide dialogue on the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence. The week, which was called AI²@CMU-Q: The Intersection of Academic Integrity and Artificial Intelligence, included a series of events to inform and inspire students to harness AI’s potential while upholding educational integrity.

Organized by instruction and outreach librarian Reya Saliba, in collaboration with Student Affairs, Student Majlis, and the Arts and Sciences department, the week brought together students, faculty, and staff for a variety of sessions that tackled complex questions surrounding generative AI.

“The goal was to create a space for meaningful conversation and shape a forward-thinking, human-centered approach to AI on campus, while maintaining academic integrity as a core principle,” said Saliba, who is an expert in educational technology. Saliba is also a member of the CMU-Q AI Working Group that is creating a campus-wide strategy to incorporate artificial intelligence responsibly in work, research and study.

The AI²@CMU-Q week featured several events for the university community. A panel discussion included senior associate deans Khaled Harras and Dudley Reynolds, along with professors Houda Bouamor, Simon Faulkner, Nimer Murshid, Mary Queen, and Veli Safak who shared diverse academic perspectives on AI’s role in higher education. Nasser Alaeddine, CMU-Q’s Chief Information Officer, led an interactive session on the technical aspects of generative AI tools.

The week also included a hands-on workshop on AI and writing, alongside a student-led activity hosted by the Student Majlis where students engaged in a friendly competition answering questions about the week’s themes.

Students in all majors at CMU-Q learned how to harness artificial intelligence within their disciplines, and how to approach ethical questions about AI from a human-centered perspective.
