DOHA, QATAR – Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) joined the region’s technology ecosystem at the inaugural Mobile World Congress (MWC) Doha, contributing academic perspective and strengthening industry ties at the global connectivity event.

For the CMU-Q community, the congress served as a powerful demonstration of the university’s impact on the local economy. CMU-Q graduates are deeply embedded in Qatar’s digital transformation, and scores of alumni attended and contributed expertise and perspective to the event. More than 1,450 students have completed their studies at CMU-Q, with a majority pursuing careers in policy, technology and business. Most alumni live and work in Doha, serving as the important human capital driving Qatar’s tech sector.

CMU-Q also contributed expert insight to the event’s sessions. Houda Bouamor, associate teaching professor of information systems, moderated a panel at the co-located Smart City Expo. She led a discussion with government representatives on “The Digital Roadmap Ahead of the Smart Sectors,” bringing an academic lens to the practical challenges of integrating transport, health, and tourism data.

The congress also provided a backdrop for strengthening industry-academia collaboration. Michael Trick, dean of CMU-Q, and Eng. Ahmad Mohamed Al-Kuwari, CEO of Qatar National Broadband Network (QNBN), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the event. The agreement sets the stage for future cooperation in digital security research and capacity building, ensuring current students continue to have access to real-world learning opportunities.
