This research project is focused on developing best practices for operating Majāl, a recently launched multidisciplinary undergraduate research journal at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. This proposal represents the first stage in the long-term development of this unique journal as a resource for students as both authors and editorial team members. The project engages three mutually informative inquiries that grapple with the journal’s priority of students’ personal and professional growth, as well as the journal’s multidisciplinary content and audiences. These three areas include 1) publication mentorship as an inclusive practice; 2) transparent review and revision in undergraduate, multidisciplinary contexts; and 3) plain language research summaries as a tool for negotiating diverse audiences. By conducting a synthesis of existing research and holistic case study spanning the production of the first two issues of Majāl, I will develop a set of best practices adapted to the CMU-Q context that will serve as a basis for Majāl’s future operation. The project will deepen the quality and sustainability of the journal and will support CMU’s commitment to undergraduate research. In addition, these inquiries will contribute to broader scholarship on undergraduate research and publication, as well as offer insight into the crucial relationship between scholarly contribution and how it is communicated to disciplinary and public audiences.
