Overwhelmingly, our knowledge about how the human brain perceives the world is based on WEIRD samples. WEIRD refers to participants from Western, Educated, Industrial, Rich and Democratic societies. Due to this, theories about psychological phenomena are biased. Cultural, environmental, political and social factors influence our cognition, and in order to develop sound theories of human psychology, we must study other cultures to gain insight into which cognitive processes vary due to environmental influences and which aspects of cognition we share due to our common biology. The proposed project aims to explore basic cognitive processes using established psychological methods and paradigms in the Qatari context. The target population for this project is the undergraduate student population in Education City (EC). Study results of EC undergraduate student participants will be compared with study results of a separate, but similar on-going project at Carnegie Mellon University campus in Pittsburgh, PA. USA. The cognitive processes that I propose to explore include: the study of language and its influence on number cognition, perception and space; implicit gender biases; and thinking towards the future - visual scene analysis. The broad aims of the research are: 1) to generate initial impressions of the unique student population in Qatar (consisting of both Qatari citizens and residents from other countries) that will help to establish areas of research interest to explore more deeply in subsequent studies; 2) to disseminate the results of these studies to the wider psychological community via empirical publications, conference proceedings and public lectures; 3) to use this knowledge in the classroom context while teaching students about psychology at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q); and 4) to provide a research opportunity for CMU-Q undergraduate students to gain experience in experimental psychological research. Expanding on the first broad aim, I would like to mention that as little to no data exist on the target population, it will first be necessary for me to run exploratory studies in order to gain an understanding of which research areas will be most interesting to further pursue. Once preliminary data is collected, I plan to explore collaborative partners in Qatar with the goal to pursue future external research funding to support this research.
