A natural language processing-based active and interactive platform for accessing English language content and advanced language learning

Kemal Oflazer

CMU-Q Point of Contact

We propose research into, and development and evaluation of an active and interactive system for accessing English language content and advanced language learning, based on advanced natural language processing technology and implemented on future tablet or e-book. This system will integrate many natural language processing technologies in an intelligent system that can interact with the reader and respond intelligently to user's questions about the content and make content more accessible. It will provide a series of functionalities ranging from dictionary look-up with sense disambiguation to named-entity detection for immediate "flashback" about characters or places (and show their relationship in graph based structures) to summarization to help reader remember prior content to more advanced functionalities such as sentence simplification and compression, on the fly content-driven question-posing and checking answers to gauge reader's level of understanding. It will also have a mechanism to track and log user behavior to help evaluate improvements in vocabulary acquisition, question answering, etc. In addition to being a large scale technology integration project, this system will incorporate the results of research into various natural language processing technologies such as sentence compression, simplification of complex sentences, summarization, question posing and answering, relating named entities in context, language learner performance tracking and evaluation.
