CMU-Q’s Deepa Nair joins international team to develop efficient vertical greenwalls

Doha, Qatar – Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar’s Deepa Nair, assistant teaching professor of history, has joined a multidisciplinary team of researchers that will develop more efficient and sustainable vertical greenwalls. The project aims to address the urgent issues of climate change and urbanization by enhancing water conservation, nutrient management, and overall sustainability in these green spaces.

The project is funded by Qatar National Research Fund and led by Dr. Jayaprakash Saththasivam, a scientist at the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute’s Water Center, as well as collaborators from HBKU and Universiti Malaysia Pahang.

The team’s innovative approach involves repurposing local agricultural waste and reusing greywater to create enhanced vertical greenwalls. Nair is contributing her expertise in the social and cultural implications of sustainable agricultural projects.

The team’s research has the potential to significantly impact urban environments by providing more sustainable and efficient green spaces. By addressing the challenges of water scarcity and nutrient depletion, these enhanced vertical greenwalls can contribute to healthier cities and a more sustainable future.
