CMU-Q students take top three spots at QCRI internship showcase

Students from Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar placed first, second and third at the final project showcase for Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) 2024 Summer Internship Program. The program included 87 undergraduate participants working on 25 projects.

The first place winner of the competition was Steve Shema Ndayambaje, a junior in the computer science program. His project, titled “A reinforcement learning (RL) model for AI-based decision support in oral cancer,” was conducted with the guidance of QCRI postdoctoral researcher Mohamed Elshirif.

Boushra Bendou, an information systems senior, was on the team that tied for second place. The project, titled “Native vs non-native language prompting: A comparative analysis,” included a graduate student from Qatar University, and two recent graduates of University of Doha for Science and Technology and Liverpool John Moores University. 

Third place went to Malak Ibrahim and her teammates from Princeton University, Qatar University, and University of Doha for Science and Technology. Their project was titled “Mapping the evolution of scientific legacy.”

The jury panel was composed of 15 experts from Northwestern University in Qatar, QCRI, QU, and UDST. They evaluated the posters on methodology, execution, creativity, real-world relevance, and clarity.
