Brain Bowl Competition tests students’ general knowledge

“Hey Buddies” wins Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar’s thought-triggering Brain Bowl Competition

Doha- “Hey Buddies” from Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, was announced the winner of Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar’s Brain BowlCompetition – an academic trivia quiz that takes place in a light-hearted atmosphere. The bi-annual competition took place on March 17, at the university’s campus, where four teams (Hey Buddies, MARS, Beecees and Jazba) from Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar competed against each other.

The evening attracted over 90 students, friends, family and faculty members who cheered on their favorite teams through the competition. The event is co-sponsored every semester by the Liberal Arts and Sciences Department and Student Affairs at Carnegie Mellon Qatar.

Brain Bowl competition, which was launched in the spring of 2008 by Ben Reilly, Ph.D., professor of liberal arts and sciences at CMU Qatar, has proven to be popular among students and faculty members.

“We came here today to cheer on our friends. This is a nice, fun competition where students can show their wit and talents, and I would definitely like to participate in it one day,” said Mohammad Janahi, a student from Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar.

The two-hour quiz night comprised 75 questions, seven of which were directed to the audience, who in their turn have won their share of prizes by giving in correct answers. The questions varied from liberal arts topics, general trivia, current trivia, to academic trivia, including math, biology, chemistry, English, foreign languages, history, logic puzzles and the classics.

According to Ben Reilly the master host of the event, the questions require intelligence more than studying, as some of the questions can be answered by using the clues and hints from the question itself.

The winning team “Hey Buddies”, which got the highest score, answered a total of 25 questions, earning 14 points, which made them lead the game by four points against Beecees. The team comprised, Ousama Obeid, Mohammed Behih, Yazan Abou Hijleh and Mohammed Tayyab, and was awarded Carnegie Mellon University’s branded items and merchandise.

“This is the fourth time we participate in this competition and this is the third time we win. We are very excited and proud that we won this time as well. We definitely have learnt a lot from the previous competitions and if it is one thing that we have learnt the most, is when in doubt leave it out; that is if you don’t know the answer to the question just leave it out, so you won’t lose points” said Ousama Obeid representing the winning team.

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, by hosting such events and through this thought-triggering quiz night, aims to increase the general knowledge of students by reading and doing more research.
