Currently there is a significant mismatch between the size of the Arabic Wikipedia and the population of the Arabic speakers both online and in the physical world. Moreover, some studies show that Arabic Wikipedia’s coverage is not uniform and strong in scientific and technical domains. One way of expanding Arabic Wikipedia is to rely on richer Wikipedia such as English. In this project, we propose a set of techniques for automatic translation of English Wikipedia articles into Arabic. The translations can be used by Arabic Wikipedia authors while composing and editing new articles. The project consists of two major components: (1) Statistical Machine Translation of English Wikipedia articles to Arabic (2) Automatic quality estimation of Arabic translations, to distinguish between the good and poor translations, so that Wikipedia authors can benefit from translations with minimal effort. The expected scientific contributions of this project are: (1) Development of new techniques for collecting machine translation data from Wikipedia. (2) Development of new techniques for statistical machine translation of text with diverse topics. (3) Evaluation and quality estimation of machine translation output in a morphologically rich target language (Arabic)
