For my next book, I want to write an Environmental History of the Arabs; in other words, a history that examines the origins, development, and future of the Arabs from the perspective of the relationship between mankind and the physical environment. I am particularly interested in 1) how changes in technology, especially agricultural technology, are intertwined with the rise and fall of state institutions, 2) the role that long-term environmental fluctuations (temperature, rainfall) have played in the fortunes of the Arabs, and 3) how anthropogenic (man-made) climate changes, ranging from deforestation to salinization to global warming, have affected the past and will affect the future of the Arab peoples.
