Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar today sent its warmest congratulations to His Highness the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and to the people of Qatar on the celebration of Qatar’s National Day.
On the occasion, G. Richard Tucker, Dean of Carnegie Mellon Qatar reaffirmed the university’s commitment to Qatar’s National Vision: “Carnegie Mellon is proud to be a part of such a significant movement to transform the nation into a leading knowledge economy, and to be a part of Qatar Foundation’s drive to equip the country’s population with the skills to get there. The programs that we offer at our Education City campus frame our commitment to the Qatar 2030 National Vision, and are aligned with its fundamental pillars of developing people, society, the economy and the environment.”
Dean Tucker continued: “Qatar’s leadership recognized that education and human development are fundamental to compete and succeed in a changing world. At Carnegie Mellon, we firmly believe that creativity and innovative thinking are key to developing a knowledge-based society, thus paving the way to creating a sustainable future and securing economic prosperity. Through our academic as well as our community outreach programs our aim is to educate young minds by providing them the tools to develop the critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate problems of regional relevance and develop solutions with worldwide impact.”
Carnegie Mellon, a leading research and higher education institute, has been in Qatar since 2004 and offers undergraduate degrees in business administration, computer science and information systems. With over 100 graduates since its first commencement exercise in 2008, the Qatar campus has brought the university’s legacy of academic excellence and entrepreneurial spirit to both public and private local organizations in Qatar, with many of its graduates securing positions in top companies in Qatar in the fields of banking, energy and technology to name a few. The Qatar campus also boasts several graduates who have gone on to start their own businesses, identifying needs in both Qatar and the region and seizing the opportunity to fill a gap in the local market.
Carnegie Mellon Qatar has taken initiative to lead outreach programs in Qatar that positively impact the community. Its programs are well-known and highly anticipated by students and educators alike – from the annual Botball robotics tournament and high school computer programming competition to professional development workshop sessions in information systems and promoting learning in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines for teachers. Carnegie Mellon structures these programs based on current global themes and issues, helping students and educators to apply skills learned to real-world problems.
