CMU-Qs Integration Bee expands uniting university talent and emerging high school mathematicians

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) expanded the annual Integration Bee this year by welcoming high school students to compete alongside university undergraduates, setting the stage for a dynamic, multi-level mathematical showdown.

Modeled after a spelling bee, the calculus competition challenges competitors to crack integral problems under pressure. Nearly 30 university students and 25 Grade 12 students from 13 schools across Qatar took on the challenge, sharing the same stage, same problems, and same competitive energy. They were judged by a distinguished panel of faculty from universities across Qatar.

AlRayan Bank, a dedicated supporter of CMU-Q’s academic initiatives, generously provided prizes for the event’s top performers.

Michael Trick, dean of CMU-Q, congratulated the students at the closing ceremony: “For me, math is much more than a subject to be mastered; it is a powerful tool for making sense of our complex world.”

Lead organizer Layan El Hajj, associate teaching professor of mathematical sciences, noted: “Bringing high school and university students together created a unique environment. Our goal was to inspire younger students while also showcasing the strength and enthusiasm of our university competitors. The interaction elevated the entire experience for everyone involved.”

The high schoolers rose to the challenge, with five students qualifying for the competitive Top 16 round. Ultimately, the top four spots were secured by university students.

Ahmed Ahmed from HBKU was named “The Grand Integrator.” Mariam Darwish from Qatar University took second place, followed by CMU-Q students Anurag Das and Sudais Arif in third and fourth place, respectively.
