CMU-Q kicks off new Bio Sci Alumni Seminar Series
The Biological Sciences program at CMU-Q is launching a new seminar series to showcase the talent, diversity, and depth of scholarship of the program’s graduates. To kick off the new series, two alumnae from the Class of 2019 spoke to faculty, staff and students about their research in graduate school.
Albandari Alkhater is a PhD student in the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. Her research focus is acinar cell programming, interlesional heterogeneity, and the development of spatial proteomic techniques.
Aisha Fakhroo is a PhD student in the Institute of Immunity and Transplantation at the University College London. Her research area is STAT5, a potential mediator of HCMV reactivation in primary dendritic cells.
Both Alkhater and Fakhroo were avid researchers as undergraduate students. At the Meeting of the Minds research symposium in 2019, each presented their work on different potential therapies for breast cancer. Alkhater received a Qatar National Research Fund award for that project, and Fakhroo received a Planning Statistics Authority award. Both alums participated in the International Genetically Engineered Machines (IGEM) competition at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
