35% of incoming students participate in at least one outreach program
DOHA, QATAR – Ahead of the March 1 admission deadline, Carnegie Mellon Qatar held a series of workshops to introduce high school students to undergraduate programs in biological sciences, business administration, computer science and information systems.
Ibtikar 2016, held February 20, showed high school students some key elements of the Information Systems (IS) program. The workshop focused on business process management, one of many fields in IS that is at the crossroads of business and technology. Students learned about how businesses need processes, such as handling customer orders or managing customer complaints, to bring value to customers. Understanding these processes is a key ingredient for the success and competitiveness of organizations.
“We hold an extensive and comprehensive suite of outreach workshops for high school students in Qatar. Secondary students are deciding what they want to study and these workshops give them an inside look at what it would be like to learn and work in these fields,” said Ilker Baybars, dean and CEO of CMU-Q.
Recently, the Business Administration program hosted Tajer – Investment for Qatar, in partnership with Al Khaliji Commercial Bank. Through a mock trading exercise, students developed an understanding of financial markets and how technology is changing the finance landscape.
Students interested in science attended the Biotechnology Explorer Program, which opened up the laboratory through an experiment that determines the protein content in various food products.
For students interested in Computer Science, CS4Qatar for Students provided insight into problem solving by working with a programmable robot. Similarly the Winter Institute, a selective computer science program available to independent school students, was held over the mid-term break.
Carnegie Mellon Qatar continues its outreach with the Summer College Preview Program, which helps prepare students for college applications and choosing a field of study.
The application deadline for fall 2016 admission is 1 March.
