Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) welcomed nearly 40 employers to Careers Platform 2019 to network with students and share their insights on hiring. The event is the culmination of a slate of programming CMU-Q offers each year to help students develop the skills of networking, resume writing and interviewing.

“It is a hallmark of a Carnegie Mellon education to learn the skills of teamwork, communication, and collaboration,” said Michael Trick, dean of CMU-Q. “These are often called ‘soft skills,’ but in today’s job market, they are essential if students are to contribute in a meaningful way.”

This year’s Careers Platform welcomed employers from a variety of sectors, including large multinational corporations, Qatar-based organizations and tech startups. Many of the employers were represented by CMU-Q alumni who now work for the organization.

Bilal Sheikh now works for Careem Qatar as the assistant general manager: “I always enjoy coming back to CMU-Q,” he said. “Last year, we recruited a CMU-Q student for a three-month internship and we were very happy with the experience. I encourage students to not limit themselves to one function when they intern, but to keep an open mind and learn as much as they can.” Sheikh graduated from the Business Administration Program at CMU-Q in 2017.

In 2019, there will be 79 students who will graduate from Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. These new graduates will join a force of nearly 800 alumni, most of whom are contributing to the development of Qatar.
