Alice is a software tool for introducing computational thinking and programming concepts in the context of creating 3D animations. Alice has been remarkably successful in North America, where research has shown improved student enthusiasm, achievement, and retention. Alice is gaining widespread acceptance by classroom teachers, as reflected in an Alice Teacher’s List that grows at 8.3% per month and more than a million downloads per year. We propose to adapt Alice to enable teaching/learning computational thinking and programming concepts in the Middle East. This adaptation requires a major redesign of graphics and themes in Alice. Our goal is to create themes and graphics relevant to a middle eastern environment, enabling middle and high school students to learn computation concepts in an engaging environment. An auxiliary goal is to provide training for local teachers in teaching with Alice ME in the classroom. An overview of this project includes: • Study ME culture to determine which themes would be relevant to the society. • Select relevant themes and develop 3D graphic models and scenery for a prototype implementation. • Develop workshop materials to introduce/use Alice ME in teacher training. • Conduct a pilot teacher training workshop. • Develop curricular materials to introduce/use Alice ME within a local school. •Conduct a pilot study in a school that includes actual class performance assessment in ICT, English as a second language, Math, and other courses.
