Sixty-five learners complete Language Bridges program

Sixty-five learners were honored for completing Language Bridges, a program that offers English classes to low-income migrant workers. The ceremony, held on November 29, was the capstone of a semester that saw 42 CMU-Q students teach English to service attendants, cleaners, contractors and Education City security guards.

Language Bridges is a student club that began in 2010 and continues with the support of Qatar Foundation's Reach out to Asia (ROTA). Faculty advisor Silvia Pessoa, associate teaching professor of English, developed curricula for ROTA’s Adult English Literacy Program in 2009. Language Bridges, as well as other programs in Doha, use these materials.

In six years, about four hundred CMU-Q students have taught in Language Bridges to more than 700 learners. Classes run for eight weeks each semester and are taught twice a week. Spring 2016 classes will start on January 31. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Silvia Pessoa.
