Largest CMU-Q graduating class has thrived with experiential learning
This year’s graduating class from Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) began their studies in lockdown, with only a screen connecting them to the campus community. As the Class of 2024 approaches Graduation Day, we reflect on their extraordinary journey.
The Class of 2024 is the largest graduating class in CMU-Q history, with 121 students, 45 of whom are Qatari citizens. They began their studies in August 2020 when the world was in pandemic lockdown. In the first two years of their university education, their classes were delivered through a variety of modes as the guidelines shifted–sometimes online, sometimes hybrid, and sometimes in-person. In spite of limited in-person opportunities, these resourceful students sought out new ways to engage with one another and the world.
As travel guidelines relaxed, more than half of the students expanded their global perspective by spending a semester abroad, either at the Pittsburgh campus or other locations. A remarkable 82 students have held leadership positions in student clubs and organizations, 89 students have done an internship, and 44 students have conducted independent research.
Representing a total of 31 countries and speaking 32 different languages, the Class of 2024 has thrived, turning challenges into opportunities. They have discovered innovative ways to learn and experience the world, and they have played a pivotal role in guiding younger students through their educational journey.
The Class of 2024 will graduate at a ceremony in the CMU-Q building on May 6.
