Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar Business Administration junior Mirabbos Anorkulov earned a silver medal at the 2026 Global Youth Sustainability and ESG Investing Challenge. Anorkulov placed second from a field of more than 4,000 students from 586 institutions worldwide.

The challenge required participants to design and backtest a sustainable, resilient portfolio aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The competition tested students on sustainable portfolio construction, quantitative analysis, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) integration, and risk management against professional market benchmarks.

Anorkulov is pursuing concentrations in finance and data analysis, with a minor in mathematics.

“The most demanding phase was qualitative ESG due diligence,” said Anorkulov. “You cannot simply take an ESG score at face value; you have to evaluate whether a company’s practices genuinely protect the environment and benefit society.”

His screening excluded industries with persistent environmental footprints or histories of resource mismanagement, focusing instead on emerging clean-technology firms with robust balance sheets. He also examined corporate governance metrics, scrutinizing board transparency and workplace culture to steer clear of firms exposed to management controversies.

This blend of statistical discipline and ethical analysis earned him the specialized distinction for “Best Quantitative Portfolio” in addition to his overall silver medal.

For the competition, Anorkulov drew heavily on the coursework and quantitative rigor of the Business Administration program at CMU-Q. “The concepts we learn in class about financial modeling, statistical methods, and data-driven decision-making formed the backbone of my strategy.”
