Teaching Grammar in the L2 Arabic Classroom: A Focus on Form Practice

Lama Nassif

CMU-Q Point of Contact

The proposed book project is entitled: Teaching Grammar in the L2 Arabic Classroom: A Focus on Form Practice (under contract with Routledge). It is a needed resource that has been absent in the field of teaching Arabic as a foreign language (TAFL). Arabic-focused resources on the actual mechanisms of language learning and teaching practices grounded in second language acquisition (SLA) theory and research are scarce or almost non-existent. Arabic instructors typically depend on resources focusing on the teaching of English and other modern languages for SLA-based teaching. The book introduces focus on form (FonF)—an approach based on SLA theory and research—to the teaching of Arabic grammar, with insights for the development of core competencies in general. It combines SLA theory and research (Part I) with specific pedagogical practices, activities, and lesson plans (Part II), feedback techniques and technological enhancements (Part III) in second language (L2) Arabic instruction, and final considerations (Part IV). It is intended for L2 Arabic professionals, including prospective, novice, and experienced practitioners, and may also appeal to instructors who aim to apply insights from TAFL to first language Arabic teaching, specifically those pertaining to the teaching of grammar within meaning-focused activities. The book will also serve as a resource for graduate programs in TAFL. Work on the book will span a period of 1.5 years, mainly involving literature review and development of pedagogical materials. The book engages Arabic instructors in SLA-based, thought-provoking questions that help them reflect on current practices while incorporating new content. In so doing, it aims to contribute to current debates and discussion of the actual “hows” of L2 Arabic teaching, and to serve as a foundation on which future volumes could build to drive Arabic teaching toward a more informed pedagogical practice.
