Transfer Students

Current undergraduate students who wish to transfer from their present university are welcome to apply for transfer admission to CMU-Q. Transfer applicants are current university students who have completed the equivalent of two semesters of university-level coursework.

Application Requirements

Application Requirements

Application requirements such as secondary school transcripts, standardized testing, and counselor and teacher recommendations are the same as for first-year Regular Decision applicants.

Transfer applicants must use the “Apply for transfer” option in the Common Application and submit all university transcripts.

Application Deadline: The transfer application deadline is January 15, the same as the regular application deadline.

Transferring Credit

A formal transfer credit evaluation will be given to admitted students shortly after the admission offer is made. Transfer credit is considered on an individual basis, and Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar may award elective credit for courses with no Carnegie Mellon equivalent.

Transfer applicants should be prepared to submit course syllabi for the university courses they have taken. Courses in which the student is enrolled during the application process will be reviewed, but granted credit only when successfully completed.

Grades are not transferred—only credit. Sometimes transfer students will be required to take specific courses, accumulating more courses than students who complete their entire degree at CMU-Q.

The time it takes to graduate will depend on completing CMU-Q’s degree requirements, not on the class standing at a previous institution.

Expectations for Awarded Transfer Credit

Expectations for Awarded Transfer Credit

Transfer students should expect to do a minimum of two years of study in order to receive a Carnegie Mellon University degree, and frequently all four years. Transfer students typically receive a credit transfer of between zero – 50% of courses taken. If a student has not taken certain coursework, such as calculus, at their previous university, they may be required to do 3.5 – 4 years of study at CMU, even if they have done 1-2 years of university study and some of their courses successfully transfer. Because Carnegie Mellon University focuses on analytical evaluation of study subjects, certain courses, such as calculus and the sciences, serve as major prerequisites for many other courses.

An evaluation of the number of courses that will transfer will be given to the student if admitted.
