TESOL Summit discusses the future of teaching English to speakers of other languages

TESOL International Association brought together thought leaders, policy makers and industry professionals for the Summit on the Future of the TESOL Profession in Athens on February 9 and 10. Dudley Reynolds, teaching professor of English at CMU-Q, is the 51st president of TESOL International Association.

After the summit, Reynolds commented: “This was a different type of event that was more than just scholarly presentations. We wanted to engage stakeholders and reflect on the state of the profession of teaching English. We defined many issues, discussed ways to solve them, and set out concrete ways to move forward.”

The summit explored four main issues facing teachers of English to speakers of other languages: English in multilingualism, reimagining English competence, the profession as a change agent, and futurology.

The summit was streamed live around the world, and discussions will continue online now that the summit has concluded.
