The Community Partner Lectures, a virtual series featuring CMU-Q’s faculty experts in the areas of business, science and technology. The next lecture will take place on October 13, 2021.
According to The Economist, the world’s most valuable resource is no longer oil, but data. Industry leaders claim that “without big data analytics, companies are blind and deaf, wandering out onto the web like deer on a freeway”. The pressing need is “to turn data into information and information into insight”. Just how have major organizations recently used data analytics to influence their strategic and operational decisions? During this community lecture, I will share some inspiring case studies. For example, Netflix saves $1 billion per year on customer retention and offering an individualized user experience with their movie recommendation engine, by harnessing the power of data analytics. What can we learn from such stories? Could we draft an individual plan of action to succeed in this domain? I will attempt to provide a roadmap.
