We're excited to announce that we are actively developing new, dedicated pages specifically designed for our Arabic-speaking users. These will offer tailored content and an enhanced experience.

Expected to launch in the next few months. Stay tuned!

Applying to Artificial Intelligence or Computer Science

Students who would like to study Artificial Intelligence or Computer Science apply to a common Computing at CMU-Q year without declaring a major. At the end of the first academic year, Computing at CMU-Q students will declare a major of either AI or CS.

This unique pathway for AI and CS students allows time for them to learn the foundations of computing so they can make an informed decision for their majors.ing at CMU-Q students will declare a major of either AI or CS.

Application Requirements

Many application requirements are the same for all majors:

  • Application requirements such as secondary school transcripts, English proficiency testing, and counselor and teacher recommendations
  • The application deadlines of November 1 for Early Decision and January 15 for Regular Decision
  • The extra eligibility requirements for Early Decision applicants
  • Decisions for all majors for Early Decision are made by December 15.
  • Decisions for all majors for Regular Decision are made by April 1.

There are also some key differences to how students in AI and CS will apply and be admitted:

  • The SAT / ACT is required for all students intending to study AI or CS
  • Students will apply to a common Computing at CMU-Q year without declaring a major
  • At the end of the first academic year, Computing at CMU-Q students will declare a major of either AI or CS

First-year computing curriculum

The first-year curriculum is very important for students planning to major in either AI or CS: students develop the foundational knowledge of computer science theory and algorithms, mathematics and probability, computer systems, and programming.

As they are building a strong foundation in class during the first year, computing students have many opportunities to learn more about the two majors.

  • All first-year students meet regularly with their advisors.
  • The first year includes the introductory course material in both the fields of AI and CS that will lead to in-depth study in each major.
  • The first year is taught by faculty members in both the AI and CS topic areas: these faculty members add insight, guidance and perspective to the majors.
  • As a small university, first-year students have frequent contact with students in their upper years who can add context and perspective.

When students choose a major and begin down their major pathways, the first year will provide a strong base from which to specialize in either Artificial Intelligence or Computer Science.
