Testing: Official TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo results

Official TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo results

To demonstrate your proficiency in English, CMU-Q requires all applicants to submit official TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo results unless you meet our waiver policy. If you have taken an exam more than once, please note that Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar considers only the highest scores.

TOEFL

CMU-Q accepts both the TOEFL iBT and the new TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition. Please follow the links for further information on test dates and locations. Use code 4246 for TOEFL score reports to be sent to Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar.

IELTS

CMU-Q accepts both IELTS Academics and IELTS for UKVI and the new IELTS Indicator. Please follow the links for further information on test dates and locations. Please note, the IELTS Indicator is currently not offered by the British Council to residents in Qatar. You can also register for a test directly with the British Council office in your country. In Qatar, the British Council office in Doha can be contacted on 800 5501.

Duolingo

CMU-Q accepts the Duolingo English Test as an equivalent for the TOEFL or IELTS.  To learn more about the Duolingo English Test and how to send results, please visit Duolingo’s site.

Waiver Policy for TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo

The TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo requirement may be waived if an applicant qualifies under our waiver policy.

Option 1: Waiving the TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo requirement through SAT/ACT score

If you have a score of 600 or higher on the SAT Reading and Writing Section OR a score of 26 or higher on both the English and Reading sections of the ACT, you will automatically qualify for a waiver from the TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo testing requirement. There is no need to initiate a request for waiver through the Office of Admission.

Option 2: Waiving the TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo requirement through primary and native language confirmation

If English is ALL of the below, you may send an email to the Office of Admission describing in detail your language background:

  • Main/primary language from birth used at home with parents
  • The language of instruction at your school
  • Your stated first language in the Common App
  • An official language of the country of which you are a citizen

All Option 2 waiver requests will be considered by the Director of Admission. If approved, the information will be verified with your high school counselor.

Testing: Official SAT or ACT results

Official SAT or ACT results (may be required)

For Fall 2026 applications, the requirement to submit SAT / ACT results depends on two factors: your first choice of major and your secondary school curriculum.

Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science

The SAT / ACT is required for all applicants.

Biological Sciences, Business Administration, or Information Systems

For these majors, Carnegie Mellon Qatar is “test flexible,” which means that the SAT / ACT is required unless you can provide one of the following:

  • Predicted results from the International Baccalaureate, French Baccalaureate, or British Curriculum. British curriculum students should have at least 4 predicted AS results or 3 predicted A level results.
  • AP exam results already achieved through the College Board, with a minimum of 3 AP exam results.

Applying as an International Student

Regular Decision Applicants

The Regular Decision application process is the same for all students, including international applicants.

Early Decision Applicants

The eligibility for Early Decision is different for international students. If you are an international applicant interested in Early Decision, please read the criteria carefully, as your Early Decision application may affect eligibility for financial aid.

Once You are Enrolled

International students who enroll at Carnegie Mellon will apply for a visa sponsored by Qatar Foundation. The initial visa is valid for one year and renewable for the remainder of the program. Students must be enrolled full-time and maintain student status in order to keep the visa valid.

Once you are enrolled, our team will assist you throughout the visa application process.

Once You Are Enrolled

Tuition and Financial Aid

In Qatar, there are many different types of financial assistance to help pay for the cost of a Carnegie Mellon education.

Selection Process

Selection Process

At Carnegie Mellon, we take a holistic approach to the application review process. There are many factors that we consider: academic performance, standardized testing results (if submitted) and non-academic performance.

We’re interested in seeing that you’ve challenged yourself in secondary school, and your academic performance will be the main factor in our admission decision. Standardized test scores are optional. If you choose to submit your scores to us, they will simply add to our knowledge of your ability.

Your non-academic activities, including extracurricular accomplishments, part-time jobs or hobbies, and community service also play a very important part of the admission process. We look at non-academic information to develop a sense of your personality, motivation and sense of responsibility.

Holistic admission means that we do a comprehensive review of your file, considering all of your grades, test scores (if submitted), personal essays, recommendation letters, and extracurricular activities before we make an admission decision.

Acceptance

Given that the number of qualified applicants exceeds the enrollment space, admission is competitive and the strongest applicants are thereby offered admission.

Acceptance packages are sent out April 1 to all applicants who have been selected.

Admitted students who enroll at Carnegie Mellon are required to submit a final transcript before they can register for classes. Final grades must be consistent with the grades presented to the selection committee.
