CMU-Q graduate named runner-up for School of Computer Science award

A graduate from Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), a Qatar Foundation partner university, was named a runner-up for the Allen Newell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research

Đorđe Popović was recognized for his senior honors thesis, “FedTeams: Towards trust-based and resource-aware federated learning.” The advisors on the project were  CMU-Q’s area head of computer science, Khaled Harras, and postdoctoral associate Hend Gedawy. Popović graduated in May 2022 with a bachelor of science degree in computer science

Harras praised Popović’s dedication to research. “Đorđe is a diligent and thoughtful researcher, and I am very pleased to see his work recognized. The Allen Newell Award is very competitive, and Đorđe has earned his place among the best undergraduate research projects at the School of Computer Science this year.”

The Allen Newell Award is presented annually by CMU’s School of Computer Science, recognizing exemplary, rigorous and impactful undergraduate research.
