Exploring Math: Birth of Calculus I
November 26, 2018 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Exploring Math is a lecture series that delves into the beauty, impact and development of classical mathematical concepts.
The first two talks of the 2018-19 academic year will feature: The Birth of Calculus I and the Birth of Calculus II by Professor Niraj Khare | Assistant Teaching Professor, Mathematics and Mohammed Zayed | Associate Teaching Professor, Physics.
About the lecture: These talks are about early successful application of calculus in solving some of the most important problems posed by nature. Works of Copernicus, Galileo and Bernoulli helped Newton and Leibniz to independently apply/discover Calculus to solve many problems. The data provided by Copernicus and Galileo led Newton to form his law of gravitational attraction. The two-part series covers these problems arising mainly from data gathered over centuries by early astronomers. These talks besides solving these famous problems also cover some interesting historical anecdotes.
