Study abroad is an opportunity for students to expand their academic horizons and experience a different culture. There are programs around the world that introduce students to new cultures, languages and educational approaches.
Finding the right study abroad program
- Where can I find classes that will fit my major?
Find classes that are appropriate for your academic program, particularly if you are looking to study over a semester or entire academic year. Discuss your interests with your academic advisor BEFORE you apply. Summer programs are often ideal for studying something new and staying on track academically.
- Where do I want to live?
Sometimes its worthwhile to simply ask yourself, where have I always wanted to go? There are programs all around the world. Don’t be afraid to go somewhere different, it could be a great addition to your resume.
- Do I speak a foreign language or am I willing to learn one?
Many study abroad programs contain a local language element. If you prefer not to learn a new language, consider programs in English-speaking countries.
- How long should I study abroad?
Programs generally last for a full academic year, single semester or summer. Often the longer you participate, the more you will gain from the program, but consider how long you can academically and financially afford to be away.
