Winter Institute introduces Qatari youth to computer science

More than a dozen young Qatari students explored the field of computer science at the fourth annual Winter Institute, held at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. In addition to classes in programming, students learned about the different fields of study in computer science, and the career options for graduates of the program.

“I gave the students a tough problem, because I think young people learn by doing,” said Gianni Di Caro, associate teaching professor of computer science and the faculty instructor for Winter Institute. “They did well, they rose to the challenge.”

Over the week, the students programmed a mobile robot to navigate an unknown maze on its own, only using information from its on-board sensors. Parents and family members attended the closing ceremonies where the students demonstrated what they learned.

“The Winter Institute is by invitation only, so we can focus on Qatari youths who are very interested in computing,” said Damian Dourado, director of pre-college programs at CMU-Q. “Over the four years that we have offered the program, we have had many participants graduate from high school and pursue computer science in university.”

During the academic year, pre-college programs consist of workshops in each major field of study offered at CMU-Q: biological sciences, business administration, computer science and information systems. The flagship program is the Summer College Preview Program (SCPP), a three-week intensive experience that prepares students for the rigor of university.

CMU-Q will be accepting applications for admission for the fall of 2018 until March 1.
