Alums share keys to job-hunting success

Five graduates of Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar returned to campus to share their experiences of success in job hunting. Asma Al Kuwari, Devika Hastak, Ahmed Mosleh, Umair Qazi and Saad Rasool spoke at Tartan Talks, a forum for CMU-Q alumni to mentor and advise current students.

This edition of Tartan Talks focused on job hunting, from creating a resume to interviewing for a position. The alumni agreed that while at CMU-Q, they developed a foundation of professional skills that have carried them into their careers.

“I learned to plan everything,” said Devika Hastak, who is now working as a writer for a PR agency that serves Qatar Foundation. “CMU-Q encouraged me to get out of my shell and participate in different clubs and activities. This has translated to my professional life.”

For Saad Rasool, a graduate of the Biological Sciences Program, the research skills he developed at CMU-Q have been instrumental in his work at Sidra Medicine. “I spent all of my time researching at CMU-Q, which is now reflected in the work I do. I am able to do this job because of the laboratory skills I developed at CMU-Q.”

All of the alumni noted the personal growth they experienced during their undergraduate education.Ahmed Mosleh noted that he spent most of his first year in the library, but learned to be more social year after year. “CMU-Q helped me to become more mature and prepared me for the next step in life.”

CMU-Q’s Career Development Office hosts Tartan Talks, as well as other learning and networking events, throughout the academic year. The office provides learning opportunities and career consulting to students to help with the transition from college to the workforce.
