CMU Honors String Quartet inspires Qatar students to pursue music

During a week-long visit to Qatar, the CMU Honors String Quartet visited three schools to share their love of music with local school children.

Members of the CMU Honors String Quartet are chosen each year through a competitive audition process; the selected students play together for the year, serving as ambassadors for the School of Music. This year’s quartet is comprised of Alicia Venables and Shu Liu on violin, Si Yu on viola and Eunsol Lee on cello.

Denis Colwell, head of Carnegie Mellon’s School of Music, accompanied the quartet: “This is my sixth year bringing an ensemble to Qatar, and each year it is such a pleasure to share our love for classical music with Qatar.”

The quartet also gave two public performances at the CMU-Q building during their stay.

“Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar is a school for computing, business and science,” said Ilker Baybars, dean and CEO of CMU-Q. “It has been my hope that when the CMU Honors String Quartet visits each year, the people of Qatar can also glimpse the exceptional fine arts program that Carnegie Mellon is known for worldwide.”
