Shahriar Haque: Being at CMU-Q taught me to work in a high-pressured environment
Tartan Talks lunchtime lecture series features Shahriar Haque, computer science graduate from the Class of 2010
Shahriar Haque returned to the CMU-Q campus to speak to students about his experiences building a career in Qatar. Haque, who graduated from the Computer Science Program in 2010, is now a lead software engineer in the oil and gas division at General Electric.
Haque spoke as part of Tartan Talks, a regular forum where alumni share their career experiences with current students. Haque was interviewed by Khaled Harras, associate teaching professor of computer science.
While still a CMU-Q student, Haque interned with General Electric, joining the company full time in 2010 after graduation. As a lead software engineer, he uses machine learning algorithms to design industrial equipment such as jet engines, compressors and gas turbines.
“Being at CMU-Q taught me to work in a high-pressured environment and to tackle multiple tasks, which prepared me for the fast-paced role at GE,” Haque commented.
Haque recommended that students should prepare for their careers by creating personal side projects that involve coding. “These always stand out on your CV and can give you a competitive advantage when applying for jobs,” Haque advised.
