CMU-Q students sweep men’s division of the Qatar University Math Championship

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar students took the three top spots in the men’s division of the Qatar University Math Championship. Nearly 200 students from Qatar University, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar and Texas A&M University at Qatar participated in the advanced level of the competition.

The first place winner was computer science sophomore Keivin Isufaj, second place went to biological sciences junior Muhammad Nahin Khan, and third place was secured by computer science junior Swapnendu Sanyal. Leiyue Chen, a computer science freshman, took fifth place in the women’s division.

Niraj Khare, assistant teaching professor of mathematics, organized the CMU-Q participation for the event: “This is the first year we have been invited to participate in the competition, and we are very pleased with how well our students performed.”

CMU-Q and Qatar University are working together in other areas to promote mathematics study and appreciation in Qatar. On April 7, Qatar University associate professor of mathematics, Abdelouahed Hamdi, will speak at CMU-Q about the usefulness of some simple basic concepts in mathematics. The lecture is part of CMU-Q’s Exploring Math series that delves into the beauty, impact and development of classical mathematical concepts.
