CMU-Q students share experiences and network at Internship Showcase

Four Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) students presented their summer work experiences to an audience of students, faculty members and potential employers at Internship Showcase 2018. As one of the first career development events of the academic year, the showcase provides both inspiration for students to pursue internships, and a venue to network with potential employers.

Refaa Al-Sahli, head of recruitment and manpower at Qatar Development Bank, said: “We’ve had CMU-Q students interning with us for the last five years, and from my experience with them, they’re really good, never scared of the work, and are very professional.”

After the presentations, potential employers were available to meet students and answer questions about the internship opportunities at their organizations. Employers included beIN sports, Cosette Solutions, Meddy, MediHealth Solutions, Qatar Airways, Qatar Biomedical Research Institute, Qatar Development Bank, Qatar Solar Technologies and Saleh Al Hamad AlMana.

Business administration senior Faisal Mir, who presented his experience as an intern at Nestle, said: “I think it’s essential for students to do internships over the summer. You truly learn when you take information from the classroom and you implement it in the real world.”

The Internship Showcase is organized by the Career Development Office at CMU-Q, which runs a slate of events and sessions throughout the year to bring together students and potential employers. In September, the Career Development Office introduced a new monthly event,Career Café, for students to discuss career options, network and learn about the job market with different employers in a casual setting.

Faten El Ayache, employer development and career consultant at CMU-Q, said: “We’re delighted with the turn-out of so many students for this important networking and career development event, and also with the support we’ve received from our participating companies. Internships are hugely important for our students: it enhances their skills, knowledge and experience, preparing them for the real world.”
