CMU’s James Wynn speaks on the gender gap in math

CMU’s James Wynn, associate professor of English and director of undergraduate studies, delivered a lecture at CMU-Q on the subject of closing the gender gap in mathematics. He presented a rhetorical analysis of the book Math Doesn’t Suck by actress and mathematician Danica McKellar, considering audience response to gauge the impact of McKellar’s rhetorical efforts.

Wynn was one of two members of CMU’s Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences who visited CMU-Q last week; Andreea Deciu Ritivoi, department head and professor of English, and Wynn consulted with faculty members and students to better understand the needs and challenges of teaching literature and writing at the Qatar campus.

While on campus, Ritivoi and Wynn also shared Department of English’s groundbreaking work in digital humanities, which combines methodologies from traditional humanities disciplines with tools provided by digital publishing and computer.
