CMU-Q students explore Dublin business hub

Carnegie Mellon alumni network extends to Ireland’s burgeoning tech and business center

A group of CMU-Q students travelled to Dublin, Ireland, to explore the city’s rapidly growing business and technology sector. The students, who represent the programs of biological sciences, business administration, computer science and information systems, toured several organizations to learn how different industries operate in Europe’s fastest growing economy.

“At CMU-Q, our professors have encouraged us to think globally when we are solving problems,” said Amer Ahmad, a senior in the Information Systems Program. “It is very interesting to see how organizations are doing business in Ireland, and very helpful as we look at our own careers.”

Students also met and networked with a number of Carnegie Mellon alumni who are now working in Dublin, including graduates from the Qatar campus, the Pittsburgh main campus, and the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program.

Mounir Sheikh, who graduated from CMU-Q’s Business Administration Program in 2017, is now working at Facebook in Dublin and helped facilitate the students’ visit to the office.

Sheikh reflected on how the alumni network helped him when he was as student and preparing for an internship with Google. “I reached out to an alum who had done the same internship, and he shared his experience, provided me with career advice, and gave me tips on how to make the most out of the role,” Sheikh recalled. “Students should not shy away from reaching out to alumni. We are always happy to help.”

In addition to the Facebook office in Dublin, the students visited Dogpatch Labs, Google, Indeed.com and KBI Global Investors, and toured University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin.
