CMU-Q team makes Top 8 at CFA Institute Research Challenge

A team of Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) students placed in the Top 8 at the CFA Institute Research Challenge in Dublin, Ireland. Competing against undergraduate and graduate teams from Europe and the Middle East, CMU-Q became the first Middle East team to reach the finals in the history of the competition.

The team members include Fizza Aamir, Badis Glaied, Alfred Godwin, Anthony Lo and Shahryar Nayyer.

Serkan Akguc, assistant teaching professor of finance, served as the team’s faculty advisor: “The students showed amazing determination over the course of their months-long research and valuation. The margins were very tight and they performed well against some talented teams.” Jevgenijs Zagorovskis from the Qatar Investment Authority was the team’s industry mentor.

The competition asked teams to provide a comprehensive analysis of Ooredoo stock and create a complete analysis, recommendation and formal presentation. The teams began work on the case in late 2017.

CMU-Q won the national competition in March that was hosted by the CFA Society Doha. A second, junior team also performed strongly and were complimented on their valuation analytics.
