Qatar tech firms share knowledge, opportunities at Careers Platform event
Computer science and information systems students at CMU-Q explored job opportunities in the tech sector at Careers Platform 2019, Technology Edition. The annual networking event brings together organizations in the technology sector and students who are looking for practical, real world experience.
The dean of CMU-Q, Michael Trick, addressed the employers at the opening of the session: “Carnegie Mellon has a distinct approach to education. We teach theory and provide knowledge, and then we ask our students to apply that knowledge to real world problems. You as employers know that practical, hands-on learning is essential, especially in technology fields.
Faten El Ayache, senior employer relations consultant, noted that more than 20 organizations attended the event, each looking to attract CMU-Q students for internship or job opportunities. “The registration opened a month ago for the employers, and so many companies showed interest and participated because they know the quality of our students.”
Students from their first year to their senior year attended the event to meet and learn more about organizations in Qatar’s technology sector. For students in their earlier years, internships are an opportunity to apply theoretical concepts to problems they will face in the workplace. For juniors and seniors, internships can be a testing ground for future career paths.
For new graduate Deeksha Singh, the Careers Platform event helped her land her first job as a data analyst and automation lead at EButler: “The CMU-Q Career Development Office emailed us that EButler was coming to Careers Platform, and everyone should send their resumes before the event, and I did. The CEO of EButler called me and asked to meet me during the event because he liked my resume.”
Singh was among several CMU-Q alumni who returned to campus as employer representatives.
Employers who attended Careers Platform 2019, Technology Edition, included: BK Systems QSTP-LLC, Catalyst, Cisco, Deloitte, EButler, Gifted, Huawei Technologies LLC, Information and Communication Technology WLL, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, Mazars Ahmed Tawfik and Co., Ministry of Transport and Communications, Qatar Central Bank, Qatar Computing Research Institute, Qatar Living, Qatar Public Relations, Queen Hospital, Rheinmetall Barzan Advanced Technologies, Senseta, Siemens, Standard Chartered Bank, Therappy and Tivoli Group.
