Education City Career Fair brings opportunities

The Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs H E Dr Issa bin Saad Al Jafali Al Nuaimi yesterday inaugurated the fourth Education City Career Fair, a networking platform for students, graduates and potential employers.

The annual event is organised by Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) along with the sponsor Shell Qatar and brings together around 70 companies from different sectors as well as students and alumni of all Education City partner universities.

“The Education City Career Fair offers opportunity for students, especially those who are not studying under a sponsorship, to meet job providers from all sectors under one roof.  Through the activity, students know about the demands of employers and where to apply after graduation,” said Dr Al Nuaimi while speaking to media.

“This Fair has seen an increasing  demand through the years. We thank the HBKU for this initiative which highlights the employment opportunities. It also means that universities are not just a place to provide education, but also have a social responsibility,” he added.

The Minister also toured the Fair and met with the exhibitors, along with Dr Ahmad M Hasnah, President of HBKU and several other officials.

The Education City Career Fair aims to develop wide-ranging internship and employment opportunities for members of Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, Georgetown University Qatar, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, HEC Paris in Qatar, Northwestern University in Qatar, Texas A&M University at Qatar, UCL Qatar, Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar, and Weill Cornell Medical – Qatar.

The two-day Fair is being held at the Education City Student Center and the event builds on the success of previous years. In 2017, more than 75 students and alumni had successful access to summer internship opportunities and more than 20 students were able to secure jobs through the employment fair and take their careers to the next level.

Maryam Al-Mannai, vice president of student affairs at HBKU, said,“HBKU and its partner universities in Education City have always been proud of their ability to produce graduates who maintain local relevance but have a global outlook. In its past editions, students and alumni have leveraged this networking platform to their professional advantage, meeting their future employers through Education City Career Fair before going on to start exciting new chapters in their career.”

Among the participating organizations, 46 companies have made full-time opportunities available, 11 companies are looking to fill part-time vacancies, 52 companies are offering various internships, 14 companies are extending scholarships and sponsorships and 12 companies have developed job-shadowing opportunities.

“We have around 70 exhibitors, including government, private and semi-governmental entities. This year, we have done intensive training for students as well as alumni to be more prepared for the Fair and how to present themselves to potential employers. Also an information session was separately held for employers where expectations regarding training, employment, and internship opportunities were discussed,” said Adam Ahmad Al Saadi, Director of Community Outreach and Students Relations, Student Affairs, HBKU.

He also said that a career-day was held for students and alumni ahead of the Fair.  It was organized with the participation of nine public and private sector companies, where career counselors assisted job seekers with their resume writing, presentation skills.
