ABP hosts lecture by CMU-Q expert on information security

In Qatar-Tribune, Janaury 29, 2018

Under the umbrella of Pre-University Education, the Academic Bridge Program (ABP) offers its students a unique opportunity to prepare for entry into EC universities.

An important element of such preparation is participation in events which involve lectures or meetings with prominent EC lecturers and scholars.

In line with this policy, the ABP recently hosted a lecture by Dr Daniel C Phelps, associate teaching professor and Information Systems Program director at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), on information security. Dr Phelps addressed students taking computer courses at the ABP.

In his talk, Dr Phelps, who teaches courses related to information system development, networking, security and auditing at CMU-Q, emphasised the importance of enhancing information security in both small establishments as well as national institutions. He also discussed risks, threats and vulnerability of data, as well as methods of their prevention. His talk was followed by a lively Q&A session where students and their ABP computer faculty inquired about a variety of issues related to the fascinating topic.

The students also had a chance to chat with the speaker more informally, as many wanted to find out more about the Information Security course at CMU-Q. The presentation enhanced ABP students’ understanding of IS-related problems, putting them in a broader perspective and stressing a rapidly growing need to raise awareness and increase preventative measures.
