SUMMARY:University Lecture | Software Architecture: Past\, Present\, and Future
DESCRIPTION:Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar welcomes David Garlan\, Professor of Computer Science\, Associate Dean\, Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science\, Carnegie Mellon University\, to speak at the A. Nico Habermann Distinguished Lecture Series.  The A. Nico Habermann Distinguished Lecture Series enables students to engage with prominent faculty and well-known leaders in the field of computer science. The lecture series is named after Professor A. Nico Habermann\, head of the computer science department between 1980 and 1988 and Founding Dean of the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon. \nClick here to attend \n  \nLecture Title: Software Architecture: Past\, Present\, and Future  \nAbstract: Software Architecture emerged in the 1990’s as an important sub-field of software engineering. In this talk I reflect on the key enablers of a discipline of software architecture that led to its use in common industrial practice\, the central ideas that form its core\, and its enduring principles that continue to shape the field of software engineering. I consider both the important concepts on which it builds\, as well as those that have built on top of it. Finally\, we examine some of the important new trends and challenges that are likely to have an impact on how software architecture will evolve in the future. \nAbout the speaker: David Garlan is a Professor of Computer Science and Associate Dean in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. His research interests include software architecture\, self-adaptive and autonomous systems\, formal methods\, and cyber-physical systems.  He is recognized as one of the founders of the field of software architecture\, and in particular\, formal representation and analysis of architectural designs. He has received a Stevens Award Citation for “fundamental contributions to the development and understanding of software architecture as a discipline in software engineering\,” an Outstanding Research award from ACM SIGSOFT for “significant and lasting software engineering research contributions through the development and promotion of software architecture\,”  an Allen Newell Award for Research Excellence\, an IEEE TCSE Distinguished Education Award\, and a Nancy Mead Award for Excellence in Software Engineering Education. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and ACM and an inaugural member of the ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Academy.
