SUMMARY:Reboot the Earth Doha
DESCRIPTION:Reboot The Earth is a social coding event that brings young computer programmers\, administrators\, architects\, those familiar with the Salesforce ecosystem\, scientists and other interested people together to improve upon or build technology that addresses the current climate crisis. This year’s focus will be on Agriculture and AI\, and will take place around the globe in the months of April to October 2025. Each location will be presented with specific UN selected challenges that focus on local climate issues. \nReboot the Earth is co-hosted by the United Nations and CMU Qatar including OICT\, FAO\, Carnegie Mellon\, Salesforce\, and DPGA. \nAt Reboot the Earth Doha\, taking place October 2–4\, the organizing partners will collaborate with students\, climate experts\, and the broader open-source community. \nOver the course of two days\, innovators will be presented with a series of tech challenges\, for which they will use open data\, AI\, Salesforce tools\, and tech concepts to build a digital public good. Each solution should aim to solve a local climate crisis unique to their community needs\, and be available to others – improving or building upon open source programs that can be used by anyone globally to address the climate crisis.  \nParticipants will benefit from dedicated support from mentors and partners\, aimed at refining and enhancing their prototypes. The event will end with an award ceremony on the final day\, recognizing and celebrating the achievements of the participants. \nRegister for Reboot the Earth. \nFor more information\, please visit: https://unite.un.org/en/reboot-earth

SUMMARY:University Lecture: Knowledge stewardship in an age of disruption
DESCRIPTION:Masud Khokhar will be speaking at Carnegie Mellon University as part of the Gloriana St. Clair Distinguished Lecture in 21st Century Librarianship\, named in honor of the CMU dean of libraries emerita. Gloriana St. Clair led the transformation of Carnegie Mellon Libraries into the 21st century\, supporting and serving both CMU students and our research community. \nMasud Khokhar is the Chief Digital and Information Officer at the University of Leeds. \nAbout the lecture: In an era defined by geopolitical tensions\, rapid advances in generative artificial intelligence\, and an urgent global imperative to meet the Sustainable Development Goals\, libraries find themselves at a pivotal moment. As traditional repositories of information evolve into dynamic catalysts for change\, the role of Knowledge Stewardship has never been more critical. Libraries are ideally placed to reclaim authority over the full life cycle of knowledge\, from its generation and curation to its long-term preservation\, and embrace a proactive\, innovation-driven mindset. This renewed vision requires a bold shift: a commitment to creativity\, capacity-building\, and a culture of positive disruption. Libraries must embrace a more active role in the knowledge ecosystem – developing skills\, infrastructure\, and approaches to influence the knowledge agenda locally and globally. This talk calls on libraries and information professionals to move beyond custodianship and toward leadership\, ensuring that knowledge remains a tool for equity\, justice\, and sustainable future. \nPlease RSVP if you plan to attend.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Usable Privacy and Security in the Age of AI and the Internet of Things: An Engineering Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Norman Sadeh is a Professor in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). He co-founded and co-directs CMU’s Privacy Engineering Program\, and also co-founded and for ten years co-directed CMU’s PhD Program in Societal Computing. Dr. Sadeh’s privacy research has been credited with influencing the development of privacy-enhancing solutions at companies such as Apple\, Google and Facebook\, and results of his research have informed activities at regulatory agencies\, including the Federal Trade Commission and the California Office of the Attorney General. \nLecture Title:Usable Privacy and Security in the Age of AI and the Internet of Things: An Engineering Perspective \nAbstract: Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things are contributing to the collection and use of our data across ever more diverse scenarios. In the process they open the door to new privacy and security threats. Yet these technologies can also contribute to the development of solutions that help address these threats. Many of these threats have to do with the limitations we\, humans\, have when it comes to recognizing threats and protecting ourselves against them. This presentation will provide an overview of work in usable security and privacy over the past 15 years drawing on research conducted with my collaborators at Carnegie Mellon University. This will include our work on the development of privacy and security assistants\, our work on privacy and security nudging\, our work on semi-automated compliance analysis\, and our work on a privacy infrastructure for the internet of things and its deployment in smart cities. The presentation will briefly discuss my experience commercializing some of these technologies through a company I founded in 2008 and sold for $225M to Proofpoint in 2018. Finally\, I will also discuss how our research has been integrated into some of our education programs at CMU\, including our privacy engineering program\, and how it has influenced developments in both industry and government over the years. \n  \nConfirm your attendance

SUMMARY:Lecture: The evolving role of computation in biomedical discovery
DESCRIPTION:Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar welcomes Russell Schwartz\, CMU Professor and Head\,  Computational Biology Department\, to speak at the A. Nico Habermann Distinguished Lecture Series.  The A. Nico Habermann Distinguished Lecture Series enables students to engage with prominent faculty and well-known leaders in the field of computer science. The lecture series is named after Professor A. Nico Habermann\, head of the computer science department between 1980 and 1988 and Founding Dean of the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon. \nConfirm your attendance \nLecture title: The evolving role of computation in biomedical discovery \nAbstract: This talk will provide a perspective on how the role of computer science and computational thinking in biomedical research has changed in recent years and where it may be going in the future from the perspective of a scientist and educator working at the intersection of these two disciplines.  To provide context\, I will first summarize some of my experience as a computational biology researcher\, as well as in education and community building at the interface of biology and computer science.  I will use these experiences to discuss how the need for computation\, and perceptions of that need\, have changed since the rise of computational biology as a discipline.  I will describe some current directions in biomedical research and education and what they tell us about the role of and need for computation in biomedical research today and in the near future.  I will conclude with some speculation about how that role is likely to continue to evolve and what those working in biomedicine can do to prepare themselves and help advance future biomedical knowledge. \n

SUMMARY:Teaching and Thinking with AI
DESCRIPTION:The excitement (and panic) surrounding A.I. is shattering expectations around assignments\, assessment\, class preparation\, and attendance while challenging us to build more future-proof and inclusive classrooms. AI is rapidly changing how humans work and think. AI is also changing how we think about the average. If AI can produce consistent “C” work then we need to update our policies and grading. AI is even changing creativity. Together\, we will examine the skills and curriculum that will matter most in this new age\, why articulation of ‘quality’ is essential and what policies and practices improve motivation and decrease cheating. Attendees will learn practical techniques to transform assignments and assessments. \nThis workshop will be led by José Antonio Bowen\, Principal and Lead Innovator. José Antonio Bowen has over 40 years of experience in innovation at top universities\, including Stanford and Georgetown. He was President of Goucher College and now leads Bowen Innovation Group\, consulting for higher education and Fortune 500 companies. \n*This keynote is for Education City faculty only  \n  \nRSVP to attend
