The Division of Student Affairs seeks to offer a broad range of programs and initiatives for students interested in developing their own leadership capacities by finding and utilizing the potential within. We currently offer a few things but are in the process of expanding the repertoire to address a wider range of student need. Please bare with us as we try to do this and help us figure out what works best for our community and its students by participating in pilot programs and giving feedback on your experience.

Foundation and History of Leadership Development at CMUQ

In the fall semester of 2007, a committee was put together to begin the planning process of what will eventually become the leadership curriculum for Carnegie Mellon Qatar. Over a series of meeting throughout the semester, the team brainstormed, discussed, assessed, and envisioned over the current state and potential future state of leadership development on campus. They came up with a series of statements and convictions about the nature of leadership both philosophically and in the context of our campus. Below you can find the fruits of this arduous but necessary process.

6 Core Leadership Convictions:

  • Service. We believe that leaders should serve first. Service is just as esteemed, if not more esteemed, than leadership itself. Servant-minded leaders strive to actively listen, understand, engage, and trust.
  • Action & Reflection. We believe that leadership involves both action and reflection. Leaders should value the act of reflection just as deeply as the act of achievement. Reflection is a tool for development, improvement, and knowledge. Inclination to act without regard to reflection hinders progress. The process is just as important as the outcome.
  • Relationships. We believe that leadership is a relationship. Anyone can engage in the process. Just as all leaders have the ability to engage others, all others have the ability to become leaders. Leadership is not solely about the leader; leadership involves interaction and collaboration with others.
  • Risk. We believe that leaders should think and act beyond conventional boundaries. Creativity, innovation, and risk-taking should be embraced as instigators of personal, group, or institutional development.
  • Inspiration. We believe that a leader can be inspirational. A leader can institute change by infecting others with optimism, vision, and purpose. Inspirational motivation is a powerful leadership attribute.
  • Self Knowledge. We believe in the importance of the inner-self on leadership. Ethics, integrity, and authenticity play an integral role in the relationships on which leadership is built.

Because we have identified these six areas of conviction about leadership, the Carnegie Mellon Qatar aims at providing opportunities for every student to engage with and explore each of these convictions. Our programming and curriculum should directly reflect or address at least one of these six convictions.

In the spring semester of 2008, we intend to offer a number of pilot programs for the leadership development of students in order to establish a more concrete leadership curriculum. Please help us in assessing the effectiveness of these programs by actively participating in them as well as giving us your feedback.
