Dubai Inter-College Speaking Competition

The Inter-College Public Speaking Competition is a two-day event held in Dubai in late November put on by the Emirates Environmental Group. Colleges and universities from around the Gulf and beyond send delegate teams of 5 - consisting of 1 speaker and 4 team members - to speak on one of 4 different topics all relating to current and pressing environmental issues.
Speeches are to be a maximum of 12 minutes and the medium of presentation is bilingual (English/Arabic). A panel of 4 judges is composed of eminent environemtnalists/conservationsists from the public and private sectors of the region. The criteria for judging is on Rhetoric Skills, Originality of Idea, Environmental Impact/Solutions, and Presentation of Research Evidence.
Winners from each topic are awarded with a crystal. The institution with the highest aggregate is awarded an Annual Rolling Trophy. Each participating institution, their speakers, team members and the coordinating teachers are given Certificate of Participation.
2007 Competition
Dates: November 21-24, 2007
This year, Carnegie Mellon will be represented by two teams, one from Business and one from Computer science! In addition to the speaking competition, this year the team of 10 students and 2 chaperones (Darbi Roberts and Jarrod Mock) will also be meeting with representatives from different companies in Dubai who incorporate green practices into their business. The hope is that students will get a better idea of how to be environmental stewards regardless of what sector of society they work in.
