Pets
From Alhannah
Pets entering Qatar require an import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture. Cats with proper documentation are allowed to enter with no difficulty, but some breeds of dogs, especially large dogs, are not admitted. Application forms for import permits may be obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture through a sponsoring employer. A copy of the pet's health certificate and vaccination record must be submitted with the application.
Adopting
Qatar Animal Welfare Society is a privately run animal shelter. It closed down for a while in 2007 due to lack of funds, but seems to be open again. If you are looking to adopt, you can get in touch with them via their website. They also tend to be on the lookout for volunteers to help care for the animals they shelter, and donations are always appreciated.
Also, most of the vets around have postings for animals which are looking for new homes.
Supplies
None of the big chain pet stores have a presence in Doha. There are a large number of small mom-and-pop shops scattered throughout the city. Most of these cater to birds, fish, and cats; few carry any supplies for dogs. Also, there are not the same taboos about types of animals carried here; it's not hard to find cats or questionable origin for sale from tiny undersized cages in some of the smaller shops.
Supermarkets carry things like pet food and cat litter, though the selection is usually not great. Qatar Veterinary Center (See Vets on this page) carries a wide variety of cat accessories, such as scratching posts, which can be hard to find elsewhere. Most vets carry at least one kind of premium food for dogs and cats.
Some have said that there are good supply shops next to the falcon shops in the old souqs, though this writer does not have first hand knowledge of such.
Vets
There are a number of vets around. some specialize in equines and dromedaries, so it's a good idea to check for experience with your particular kind of pet before committing to using a particular vet.
Another place with very competent western expat vets is the Qatar Veterinary Center (formerly Animal Care Center). It's phone number is 4877144. To get there: head south from Burger King roundabout on Arab League street. At the next roundabout (which is quite small) turn left. The center will be about 50m down the road on the left side. Boarding services are also available. Location of QVC
Heavily advertised is The Vetinery Surgery. This has a number of vets; there's one from the Gulf who started the practice and a few from other regions. You experience here depends largely on which vet you get; we've gotten good advice from some, and some pretty kooky advice from others. Boarding services are also available. To get there from school: Head south on C ring from TV roundabout. Go straight through a number of lights. At the next intersection after you go under an overpass and past what was the athletes village for the Asian Games, turn left. On this block, you'll see a "Barbie's Saloon" on the right; turn just before it. Immediately after the saloon, turn left onto a small road. The road will quickly bend right and the surgery will be on the left.
As most of the vet services are provided by expats, they tend to be more expensive than you'd find in the States, sometimes by 50% or more.
