Ramadan
From Alhannah
Islam’s holiest month. The exact dates are tentative as the Muslim calendar is lunar, not solar, and the beginning of each month depends on the new moon being sighted over Saudi Arabia. The dates of Ramadan rotate backwards by 11 or 12 days every year, relative to the solar calendar; right now, it occurs in the fall.
During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast during daylight hours. Besides the fact that we need to respect their religious observances, it is illegal for expats to eat or drink in public during daylight hours, even drinking water in your car, or chewing gum. Restaurants will be closed during the day and open at sunset, though the large hotel restaurants usually remain open. You can bring food in to CMU-Q for lunch, but please remember to close your door while you are eating or drinking.
Ramadan ends with Eid Al-Fitr.
