Pearl diving was the mainstay of Qatar's economy before the invention of cultured pearls. Pearl jewelry is comparatively cheap here; it's widely available in the gold souq, but many CMU-Q folks have had luck with Mr. Darwish, who has a store in Al Bidda Park. His pearls are apparently from Asia, not here, if that makes a difference to you.
