For global news, there are a plethora of web sources. As in the states, you can check [CNN], [BBC] or whatever your favorite source of news is.

I'm unaware of any local sources of physical papers (the New York Times, etc.), though they may exist.

For more local news sources, there are a number of good options.

  • The Peninsula is one of Doha's two major English language newspapers. The online edition is updated daily, and contains primarily local stories. Physical editions are available in the morning from vendors at major roundabouts. Peninsula vendors wear blue-green shirts.
  • The Gulf Times is the other major English newspaper. It also has an online edition which is updated daily. Physical editions are available from vendors at major roundabouts wearing maroon shirts.
  • Qatar Journal is a community-driven online newspaper, based in Doha. Qatar Journal publishes the news a day before the local newspapers' sites, and is read by local reporters. It's a good digest of the local Doha stories.
  • Al Jazeera is based in Doha, and is the leading Arabic news source for the wider Gulf region. It also has extensive news in English. The focus is less on Qatar and more on the wider region. In the States, Al Jazeera is sometimes accused as being significantly biased, particularly on certain topics (e.g. the Palestinian/Israeli conflict). However, the news presentation tends to reflect the prevailing views of the region.
