Jarir's Bookstore is one of the best place to buy English-language books in Doha. This is not to say the selection is terrific; it's similar to what you might expect at an airport bookstore. They carry pretty good array of current bestsellers, and a somewhat eclectic collection of children's books and technical books. There is also a large Arabic language section as well.
Jarir's also carries some of the things you might expect at an OfficeMax: office supplies, computers, computer accessories, digital cameras, and software. As in OfficeMax, the electronics tend to be overpriced.
Additionally, there is a large art and hobby supply section. If you're looking for generic craft supplies, this is a good place to look.
Jarir's is on Salwah road between C Ring and D Ring, close to C Ring. If you're heading away from the city center (towards D ring), it's on your right. You have to take the first right onto a frontage road, JUST after the Ramada Junction intersection. The turnoff happens before you can see the storefront, so it's easy to miss the first (or second, or third!) time you go there. It's across the street from Starbucks.
Recently a Virgin Megastore opened at the Villagio Mall. It seems to have a slightly better selection of books, and is more willing to carry books on topics which are somewhat controversial in the region.
